This study provides an application of the Marascuilo procedure, an underutilized, yet efficient statistical method for teasing out differences in multiple proportions (pairwise) when comparing different populations. Although more common in behavioral research, the method has been increasingly used in business and economics research. South Carolina long-term care facilities provide the context of the study. We obtained data on deaths and infections of residents and staff, reported from March 2020 to August 2020. We investigate whether there were statistically significant differences in infection rates and death rates, among residents or among staff, across different facilities. The findings suggest statistically significant differences in residential infection rates and death rates in three types of facilities. We also find that infection rates for staff differed when compared to nursing homes. We draw from recent literature from multiple countries on the management of long-term care facilities as the pandemic unfolded, to develop insights using our application.
