Abstract

Uncertain remote work contexts and virtual work environments have accentuated the importance of the onboarding process. Remote work assignments make it difficult for organizations to rely on traditional processes, including onboarding. The purpose of this paper is to identity the nuances of traditional employee onboarding in relation to onboarding for remote workers. Assimilating new employees into an organization assists in informing an employee’s psychological contract. Resultantly, if conducted thoroughly, introducing and socializing new employees in an organization can be positively associated with key affective and behavioral outcomes, including a productive and motivated workforce. This article provides a systematic review of the extant literature on remote onboarding. It further provides an overview of the four essential steps in an effective onboarding process, the critical employee needs that can be met through an effective remote onboarding process, and recommendations for organizational agents to follow as the traditional work environment continues to evolve into a new territory, given technological advancements.
